Chocolate Protein Ice Cream Recipe without Banana

This easy chocolate protein ice cream boasts a whopping 19g of protein per serving with just 2g net carbs! Or if you are feeling extra indulgent, 57g of protein for the whole pint. Remember I mentioned this was a guilt-free treat? The full pint is still only 344 calories!

Many healthy homemade ice cream recipes include bananas both for texture and flavor. While a nutritious addition in many cases, bananas don’t always fit into your meal plan if you have specific goals – particularly around your carbohydrate intake.

You may like this 3 Ingredient Strawberry Ice Cream – it has just 200 calories and 18g of protein for the entire pint!

That is why I developed this delicious chocolate protein ice cream recipe – so you could stick to your goals and still enjoy a creamy, chocolatey treat!

Why you’ll love this chocolate protein ice cream

  • Healthy recipe – One serving of this recipe (2/3 cup) is about 114 calories and has 19 grams of protein.
  • Easy to make – This is very easy to follow. The only hard part is waiting 18-24 hours for the ice cream to be frozen.
  • Protein-rich Ice Cream – This recipe has a bit more Fairlife milk and protein powder than some of my other ice cream recipes. This slight change increases the protein content for a pint of this chocolate protein ice cream recipe to 57g of protein.

Ingredients

  • Fairlife milk – Fairlife is a great high protein, low carb, low fat milk option. And it doesn’t have those funky gums or emulsifiers than can mess with your stomach!
  • Naked Nutrition Grass-fed Whey Protein – I use the unflavored grass-fed protein powder. By far my favorite protein powder. It mixes great and doesn’t have any weird or gritty after taste and mouth feel.
  • Vanilla extract – you can use either liquid vanilla extract or you can even use vanilla bean paste for a richer vanilla flavor
  • Stevia extract – I love the convenience of NOW Organic Stevia Extract
  • Besti Monk Fruit Erythritol Blend – I’ve been loving the Besti Brand Sweeteners. I have a few of them that I alternate between.
  • Cocoa powder – make sure it’s an unsweetened kind. Regular or dark cocoa powder works. Just make sure you don’t use cacao powder for this or it will be bitter and not as sweet.

Tips & Tricks

  • Plan ahead for when your sweet tooth starts calling. This chocolate protein ice cream takes a full 18-24 hours to freeze before it can be mixed in the Ninja Creami. Be sure to make this recipe the day before you hope to eat the ice cream.

Tools to make this easy recipe

  • Ninja Blender – I absolutely love my ninja blender. Not only can you use it for the obvious like smoothies and shakes, but it works perfect for making the ice cream base as well!
  • Ninja Creami ice cream maker – I honestly am in love with this Ninja Creami. Before I bought these extra Ninja Creami Pints I was using it every day. Now I make ice cream in my Ninja Creami in bulk, doing 4-5 recipes at a time. I opted for those pints because they were about half the price, but be weary if you need them quickly, it took about 3 weeks to get here. They did have some prime options, but I was being thrifty.

How to make chocolate protein ice cream without bananas

  1. Add all of the ingredients into a blender or mason jar. Blend or shake until the ingredients are well combined.
  2. Transfer the liquid to the Creami ice cream pint and place the lid on. Freeze for 18-24 hours.
  3. Once the ice cream base is completely frozen, remove it from the freezer.
  4. Remove the lid and transfer the pint into the Ninja Creami pint holder.
  5. Place the blade into the lid and then place the lid onto the pint holder.
  6. Lock the ice cream into the creami and select either the ice cream or soft serve selections.
  7. If after one round of spinning your ice cream is a little dusty in texture and not creamy, select the “spin again” setting.
  8. After it’s finished remove the pint from the holder and enjoy.

Substitutions

  • If you are wanting a higher calorie protein ice cream, you can substitute the milk with heavy cream or half and half. This would be good for someone wanting to gain weight, someone who is having trouble getting enough calories in, or if you are intermittent fasting and need high calorie food choices.
  • If you can’t find Fairlife milk, you can use skim or 1% milk of your choice.
  • You can also use any milk alternative instead of Fairlife milk to reduce the calorie content of this chocolate protein ice cream.
  • If you’re looking for protein powder or low carb sweetener substitutions, check out this keto protein ice cream recipe where I share lots of different options.

How to store

Store this chocolate protein ice cream in the freezer with the lid on. It should last 3 to 6 months in the freezer as long as the lid is on tight.

FAQs

How do you thicken protein ice cream?

I can’t take any credit for it, the Ninja Creami Ice Cream Maker does all the work. It makes thick and creamy ice cream. If you freeze for less than 18 hours if may have softer texture.

How do you add protein powder to ice cream?

Protein powder is a great way to increase the protein content of your ice cream. Many prefer the texture of protein powder when it is mixed in using a blender or food processor. I add all the ingredients to a small blender to mix the protein powder into the ice cream before freezing.

What is protein ice cream made of?

This chocolate protein ice cream recipe is made with Fairlife milk, whey protein powder, vanilla, sweetener, and cocoa powder.

Can I sprinkle protein powder on ice cream?

I wouldn’t suggest it. It might be clumpy and not have the best taste/texture.

Which protein powder is best for ice cream?

I prefer to use an unflavored protein powder and then add the flavors to the ice cream base to control the ingredients being used.
