The air fryer is slowly becoming my favorite way to cook salmon. You can even make this furikake salmon using frozen salmon in the air fryer!
This is especially good if you’re looking for a quick and easy healthy dinner option.
The trick to getting deliciously crispy salmon skin is to pre-heat your air fryer prior to cooking the salmon. It's the same technique I use when cooking a steak in the air fryer.
What is Furikake Seasoning?
Furikake seasoning is a Japanese seasoning that is comprised of bonito flakes, nori, salt, sesame seeds, and sugar. It can vary a little in ingredients depending on which region you are in. It's a sweet, salty and crunchy seasoning.

- Furikake seasoning - you can find Furikake seasoning at most Asian Markets, Walmarts, and online retailers like Amazon.

You may need to add 1-2 minutes more to the air fryer depending on the thickness of your salmon.

How to make Air Fryer Furikake Salmon
- Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400F.
- Next sprinkle the furikake seasoning over the salmon and slightly press down to make sure the seasoning sticks well.
- Cut the salmon into 4, 4 ounce filets
- Transfer the salmon filets to the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 400F for 8 minutes. Check with a meat thermometer at the thickest point of the salmon.
Stovetop Directions
If you don't have an air fryer, you can always make this furikake salmon in a cast iron skillet on the stove.
First, cut the salmon into 4 (4 oz) filets. Heat a skillet to medium heat and add a tablespoon of avocado oil. Season the salmon with furikake seasoning and place the salmon in the skillet.
Cook the salmon for 4 minutes on each side or until internal temperature reaches 145F.
Substitutions
If you do not have salmon, you can use another fatty fish like trout, herring, or mackerel. If you can't find Furikake seasoning at your local Asian market or even Walmart, you can substitute it with something sort of similar.
Maybe the "Everything but the Bagel seasoning" would be a good option to try.

If the salmon has skin on it, most likely it won't stick if you put it straight into the air fryer. The salmon skin is packed full of healthy omega 3 fatty acids, so no need to add oil.
If you're using skinless salmon filets, you may need to spray the air fryer basket with avocado oil to help prevent it from sticking.
Chances are you forgot to pre-heat the air fryer, or you are using salmon that is not very fresh.
