Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Sometimes you just need a chocolate fix. What better way than with this homemade - small batch - chocolate chocolate chip ice cream recipe?

It only calls for a handful of ingredients and comes together with very little effort with the help of your Ninja CREAMi ice cream maker.

By using Fairlife milk in this recipe, we up the protein content making this a great option for a sweet treat without unraveling your health goals. One serving of this ice cream has just over 250 calories and 6g of protein!

This recipe also uses a monk fruit erythritol blend and stevia so the carbohydrate content is much less than traditional ice cream. And don't forget Stevia sweetened chocolate chips!

There is just 8g net carbs per serving of this Ninja Creami Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. You could even put some low-carb chocolate sauce on it for that triple chocolate ice cream effect.

You'll also love this Ninja CREAMi Chocolate Banana Protein Ice Cream and this Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Ice Cream. For even more ice cream recipes, check out this post on the best Ninja CREAMi recipes.

Why you'll love this chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips

  • Healthier dessert option – One serving of this recipe (⅔ cup) is just over 250 calories and has 6g of protein and only 8g net carbs!
  • Easy to make – This recipe calls for few ingredients (many of which are likely already in your refrigerator or pantry).
  • Protein-rich – By using Fairlife milk you are increasing the protein content in this ice cream - making it that much more satisfying to eat!

Ingredients

  • Half-and-half or heavy cream - it's hard to mimic the creaminess you get from half-and-half or heavy cream in ice cream. Keep in mind that this does also increase the calories and fat in the recipe.
  • Fairlife milk – Fairlife is a great high-protein, low-carb, low-fat milk option. And it doesn’t have those funky gums or emulsifiers that can mess with your stomach!
  • Vanilla extract – you can use either liquid vanilla extract or you can even use vanilla bean paste for a richer vanilla flavor
  • Stevia extract – I love the convenience of NOW Organic Stevia Extract  (I used it, but I just forgot to put it into the ingredient photo)
  • Besti Monk Fruit Erythritol Blend – I’ve loved the Besti Brand Sweeteners. I have a few of them that I alternate between.
  • Cocoa powder – make sure it’s an unsweetened kind. Regular or dark cocoa powder works. Just make sure you don’t use cacao powder for this or it will be bitter and not as sweet.
  • Stevia sweetened chocolate chips – I love Lily’s; they’ve been my go-to for years!

Tips & Tricks

Make sure to make this recipe the day before you want to eat the ice cream. It takes a considerable amount of time for the batter to freeze before it can be finished in the Ninja Creami.

For best results, let the base freeze for 18-24 hours. The manual states 24 hours, but I've done in it less and the ice cream has come out delicious creamy.

Tools to make this easy recipe

  • Ninja Blender – I absolutely love my ninja blender. Not only can you use it for the obvious like smoothies and shakes, but it works perfect for making the ice cream base as well!
  • Ninja Creami ice cream maker – I honestly am in love with this Ninja Creami. Before I bought these extra Ninja Creami Pints I was using it every day. Now I make ice cream in my Ninja Creami in bulk, doing 4-5 recipes at a time. I opted for those pints because they were about half the price, but be weary if you need them quickly, it took about 3 weeks to get here. They did have some prime options, but I was being thrifty.

How to make chocolate chocolate chip ice cream

  1. Add all of the ingredients into a blender or mason jar except for the chocolate chips. Blend or shake until the ingredients are well combined.
  2. Transfer the liquid to the Creami ice cream pint and place the lid on. Freeze for 18-24 hours.
  3. Once the ice cream base is completely frozen, remove it from the freezer.
  4. Remove the lid and transfer the pint into the Ninja Creami pint holder.
  5. Place the blade into the lid and then place the lid onto the pint holder.
  6. Lock the ice cream into the creami and select either the ice cream or soft serve selections.
  7. If after one round of spinning your ice cream is a little dusty in texture and not creamy, select the “spin again” setting.
  8. Next make a hole in the ice cream and drop in your chocolate chips. Next select the “mix in” setting and let that run. After it’s finished remove the pint from the holder and enjoy.

Substitutions

  • If you are wanting a lower calorie ice cream, you can substitute the heavy cream or half and half with whole milk. You may lose a bit of the rich, creamy texture - but is still delicious! If you're looking for some lower calorie - higher protein ice cream try my Chocolate Protein Ice Creami or this 3 Ingredient Keto Strawberry Ice Cream.
  • If you can’t find Fairlife milk, you can use skim or 1% milk of your choice. I used 1% fair life milk for this recipe. You can even use the Fairlife protein shakes if you want a higher protein chocolate ice cream.
  • You can also use any milk alternative instead of Fairlife milk to reduce the calorie content of this chocolate ice cream.
  • You may substitute regular chocolate chips if you can not find stevia sweetened or sugar free. Just note that this will adjust the nutrition content - especially the calories, sugar, and fat.

Mix ins

I mixed in chocolate chips, but if you want to elevate this chocolate ice cream recipe, make a batch of these chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and crumble in a few as a mix in and toppings.

How to store chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips

Store this chocolate chocolate chip ice cream in the freezer with the lid on. It should last 3 to 6 months in the freezer as long as the lid is on tight. Before you go to eat the double chocolate ice cream, place it in the Creami and chose the ice cream function.

If you don't want to use the ice cream machine, you can alway let it thaw on your counter for 15 minutes to soften up.

If I used almond milk instead of Fairlife milk, would it make this ice cream more crystallized? Due to the amount of carbs, I try to use almond milk.

    Thank you.
