Sirloin vs New York Strip

Whether you are grilling for a special occasion or just looking for a meal after work, it can help to know the differences between the two steaks! Some of the differences of Sirloin vs. New York Strip that we are going to dive into are:

  • Nutrition
  • Flavor and Texture
  • Price

Sirloin vs. New York Strip: Nutrition Comparison

Calories in 4 oz portions of two steaks

  • 4oz New York Strip: 263 kcal, 23g protein, 0g carbs, 17g fat
  • 4oz Sirloin Steak: 138 kcal, 25g protein, 0g carbs, 5g fat
Zinc

Beef is a meat that is the highest percentage of zinc! It has 4 mg per 100 g in lean beef! Similarly to iron, it is a micronutrient that is most easily absorbed by the body when it is found in meat! Zinc is an incredible micronutrient because it helps us with growth, brain development, and our sense of taste!

Zinc works with the enzymes in our body to make sure that we function properly. Without it, we can experience loss of appetite, memory, and vision! So eating beef ensures that we are including zinc in our diets!

Vitamin D

It is commonly known that Vitamin D is incredibly important for our bones. What is less commonly known is that it is also important for the development of our immune systems! It helps to prevent diseases before they come!

Without enough Vitamin D, it can affect our mood. There is an increased risk of depression when people do not get enough Vitamin D. You may hear the term "seasonal depression." This term has to do with people not getting as much sun during the winter, and it negatively affecting their mood.

Our bodies can naturally create Vitamin D, but it has to use the rays from the sun to do it! So, when we are not going in the sun as much, it is important to get Vitamin D from other places: FOOD! Beef is a great source of Vitamin D, which can help us to bridge this gap!

Sirloin vs. New York Strip: Flavor and Texture Comparison

Sirloin is a leaner cut of steak, which means that it has less fat. This can create a tougher and chewier texture. The flavor of Sirloin can be described as having a beefy flavor. So if you like a meatier steak, you will love the sirloin steak!

On the other hand, the NY Strip, has a much more tender texture because it has more fat in it. This gives it a softer, easier to chew, texture. The flavor of the NY strip is much more buttery, rich, and juicy, than that of the Sirloin.

Sirloin vs. New York Strip: Price Comparison

Sirloin is typically the cheaper of the two cuts of beef. This is because it comes from a much larger portion of the cow. So there is more of it available! Due to its tougher texture, the steak is also not in as high of demand. This also bumps down the price!

Where the Steaks Come From

Sirloin

Sirloin steak is actually cut from the sirloin of the cow. The sirloin is placed between the 13th rib near the back of the cow, but before the hips. The sirloin is past the short loin, which is where the NY strip is from.

NY Strip

The New York Strip Steak is located in the short loin of the cow. It is found behind the ribs and before the thigh of the cow. This area is a part of a muscle of the cow, but it is a muscle that is barely worked! This helps keep the steak tender!

Best Ways to Prepare The Cuts of Steak

Like all types of steaks, there are a variety of ways you can prepare them. Depending on your preference, you can grill, cook in a pan, bake, smoke, air fry, and more. I recommend trying different recipes to see how you like your different types of steaks prepared.

New York Strip Recipes

Which One is Right for You?

Whether you are looking for a cut of steak that is lower in fat or you are looking for a more tender steak, the decision is completely up to you!

Think about the different factors: nutrition, flavor, texture, and price. What of those factors is the most important to you! No matter what you choose, there are so many amazing recipes to choose from, that will create steaks you will love!

Can I use strip steak instead of sirloin?

You can interchange these steaks if you need to! It may not taste the same, as the New York Strip will have the ability to keep the moisture and tenderness best.

Which one should I use for my BBQ?

It is a personal preference! NY Strip is higher in fat which is often preferred due to its abundance of flavor. Both steaks can be used at your grill!

What is the best way to reheat leftover steaks?

You can reheat it in the air fryer, on the stove, in the oven, or even microwave. The best way to reheat steak, in my opinion, is to air fry it on 390F for 2-3 minutes!
