One memory I have growing up is making boxed brownies with my mom. It was like our Sunday afternoon tradition. There's just something about warm fresh brownies, straight from the oven with a cold glass of milk that reminds me of my childhood.

As I've grown older, though, I've ditched the boxed brownies and opted for homemade ones. After I mastered homemade brownies, I started experimenting with ways to make them healthier.

You'll love these delicious gluten-free brownies, the best fudge brownies and these high-protein brownies.

3 Ways to Make Brownies healthier

  • Substitute oil with fruit
  • Substitute flour with protein powder
  • Add Omega 3 Fatty Acids

This recipe encompasses all 3 ways to make brownies healthier. Bananas instead of oil, protein powder instead of flour and then I added ground flax seeds to boost the omega 3 fatty acid profile. The protein powder that I use is Gnarly Whey. It's made with grass-fed whey and contains no artificial flavors or colors, but most importantly it tastes delicious!

I would not recommend using all 3 substitutions for the unseasoned recipe maker. It has the propensity to be disastrous. I would suggest taking a standard recipe and substituting one of the above ways. After you've tested that recipe and it's come out desirable, then the next time you make it I would add in another substitution and so on until you reach the desired macronutrient and micronutrient profile.
