Make delicious broiled walleye in less than 10 minutes! Simply flavored with salt, pepper, lemon and garlic, these walleye filets are easy to make!
Broiled Walleye Recipe
Ever since I made my blackened walleye recipe, I've been looking forward to trying walleye again. This time I went with a simply seasoned broiled walleye.
It's incredibly easy to make and you'll have dinner on the table in about 10 minutes (minus the oven pre-heat time). Broiling is a fast and easy way to cook fish.
Broiling walleye leaves this white fish deliciously tender. Walleye is a great source of protein and is low in fat. It's great for meal prep or an easy dinner.
Pair this broiled walleye filet with your favorite side dish, or even a casserole like this broccoli and cheese casserole.
What is Walleye?
If you're like me and never heard of Walleye before moving to Michigan, let me give you the low down.
Walleye is a fresh water fish that is commonly found in Lake Michigan. It's a white fish, with a mild flavor - great for those who dislike "fishy" tasting fish.
It does have some pin bones, so please double check it for bones after you get your filets from the grocery store or your local fish market.
Why you'll love this Broiled Walleye
- High protein - these broiled walleye filets are very high in protein and are a great source of omega-3 fatty acid
- Simple ingredients - few ingredients that you can find at your local grocery store
- Great flavor - with its naturally mild flavor, paired with the lemon and garlic makes this recipe delicious
Ingredients
- Fresh walleye filets
- seasonings: salt, pepper, fresh garlic cloves
- lemons
Tips & Tricks
Don't forget to grease the bottom of the baking dish. This helps to get the walleye skin crispy and keeps it from sticking.
Don't add the garlic and lemon juice to the fish when it first goes under the broiler. The garlic is heat sensitive and can burn easily.
What is broiling?
The broil setting on your oven is a great way to cook different types of food. Broiling uses the heating element in the top of the oven. This applies high temperatures to the top of your food.
Broiling can be used to cook entire meals like in this walleye recipe, my broiled chicken thighs and broiled chicken leg quarters. Or you can use broiling to make tops of foods crispier or to caramelize sauces like I do in these Instant Pot Beef Ribs or Instant Pot Baby Back Ribs.
How to make Broiled Walleye
- Top the walleye with salt and pepper.
- Transfer to a casserole dish or broiler safe dish.
- Broil on high for 6 minutes
- Add in the lemon juice and minced garlic to the top of the walleye
- Broil for another 2 minutes until internal temp is 145f with a meat where thermometer
Substitutions
If you do not have walleye you can always substitute this for tilapia or haddock. These are a great alternative to walleye because they are a different type of white fish.
You can also use jarred mince garlic or garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. You can also used bottled lemon juice instead of squeezing fresh lemons for their juice.
What to serve with Broiled Walleye
I served my Broiled Walleye with this Blackstone green bean recipe because I was keeping it low carb. It also goes great with Grilled Blackstone Acorn Squash or Air Fryer Broccolini.
If you were not looking to reduce your carbs you could pair this recipe with some roasted potatoes and green beans.
